Cross-cutting issue 1: Access to genetic resources and benefit - sharing

Fair and equitable sharing with resource providers of the benefits arising out of the use of genetic resources is an objective of the CBD. For centuries people have utilised plants, animals and microorganisms (genetic and biochemical resources) to produce food and treat disease. Countries seek access to samples of biological or other material containing genetic material or biomolecules, for purposes of research, conservation, and commercial or industrial application. Australia discusses these issues with other countries in the CBD and other international forums such as the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
