Cross-cutting issue 2: Alien species

Invasive species in Australia include diseases, fungi and parasites; feral animals; insects and other invertebrates; introduced marine pests; and weeds. These can have a major impact on Australia's environment, threatening individual species and reducing overall species abundance and diversity. Australia prevents the entry of potentially invasive species through a rigorous quarantine regime and a biosecurity assessment system. Effective regional cooperation, can prevent the entry of potentially invasive species which may originate from regions with similar climatic and biophysical conditions, and close cooperation is vital as world trade and movement of goods and people expand. Australia works within the CBD and other international organisations and bilaterally with regional countries and major trading partners to improve invasive species management and to share experience , on science-based risk assessment and biocontrol policies and systems.
