Cross-cutting issue 5: Climate change and biological diversity

Many of Australia's natural ecosystems have limited geographical ranges, making them particularly vulnerable to climate change and limiting their capacity to adapt. Some of Australia's most vulnerable natural systems include reefs, wetlands, mountain forests and alpine areas. Australia has developed a National Biodiversity and Climate Change Action Plan to support biodiversity adaptation to climate change across Australia. The plan focuses on catchment hydrology, shifts in biodiversity, identification of species most at risk from climate change, and the potential expansion of invasive species in future climate scenarios. A key element of Australia's climate change response is The National Climate Change Adaptation Programme, which aims to prepare Australia's governments and vulnerable industries and communities for the unavoidable impacts of climate change.
