Cross-cutting issue 8: Global strategy for plant conservation

Australia supports the aim of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) to halt the loss of plant diversity. The most important areas for plant diversity in Australia are generally protected within conservation reserves. However, some important vegetation remnants remain on private land. Increasingly, these are protected by direct purchase and the use of voluntary conservation covenants. Because of their uniqueness and adaptation to harsh climatic and environmental conditions, Australian native plants are also potentially a valuable genetic source. (See also Cross-cutting issue 10: Global taxonomy initiative).
