Cross-cutting issue 9: 2010 biodiversity target

Australia supports, as an aspirational goal, the CBD target to achieve by 2010 a significant reduction of the current rate of biodiversity loss at the global, regional and national level as a contribution to poverty alleviation and to the benefit of all life on earth, and its subsequent endorsement by the World Summit on Sustainable Development. For Australia, national and international targets can usefully provide a flexible framework for 'best endeavour' biodiversity conservation and sustainable use achievements. Australia has moved towards specific, time bound and measurable targets in natural resource management policy, through a National Standards and Targets Framework. In addition, the framework monitors and evaluates natural resource management investments.
