Australia's Clearing-House Mechanism
Thematic issues
Cross-cutting issues

Until 1973, information on Australia's plants and animals lay scattered throughout the many libraries, museums and herbaria here and overseas. In that year, the Australian Government established the Australian Biological Resources Study (ABRS) to coordinate research in taxonomy, the science that identifies, describes, classifies, and records the distribution of our flora and fauna. Since its inception, the ABRS has produced significant taxonomic research on Australia's biodiversity, and an internationally recognised series of publications and databases. The ABRS also participates in other international activities such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (see also Cross-Cutting Issue 8: Global Strategy for Plant Conservation).
