The EPBC Act sets out the principles for the sustainable use of Australia's biodiversity. For example, it allows the Government to play a greater role in promoting ecologically sustainable management of fisheries and assessing their environmental performance. The Natural Heritage Trust of Australia Act 1997 provides the legal basis for the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT), which is a one of the major programme to protect and conserve Australia's natural resources. The over-arching objectives of the NHT include biodiversity conservation, sustainable use of natural resources, and community capacity building and institutional change. The Australian Government also reinforces the efforts of other countries to protect their wildlife by regulating trade in those species identified under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
