Agricultural biodiversity refers to the variety and variability of animal, plant and microbial organisms and genetic resources that are important for food and agriculture. Australia is party to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) Plant Genetic Resources Convention for Food and Agriculture (PGRFA). Australia also pays close attention to the CBD's varied work on agricultural biodiversity particularly where it concerns taxonomy, sustainable use indicators, access to crop variety germplasm, genetic resources and alien species used in agriculture, and international agricultural trade competitiveness. The Australian Government develops national policies and initiatives to sustainably manage natural resources and biodiversity in agriculture. It also provides incentives for sustainable agriculture. For example, the National Landcare Programme encourages farmers to adopt sustainable management practices, and improve their productivity, profitability and the condition of our agricultural and farm based natural resources.
