Thematic issue 2: Dry and sub-humid lands biodiversity

Nearly three-quarters of Australia comprises arid and semi-arid areas, which collectively are known as rangelands. Australia's rangelands include some of its most remote places and least disturbed landscape, with a large mix of ecosystem types including native grasslands, shrublands, woodlands and the tropical savanna woodlands. The rangelands and their biodiversity, have special management needs and Australia's experience in rangeland management contributes to CBD consideration of dry and sub-humid lands biodiversity. Australia is also party to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) where dry-land issues are more broadly considered at the international scale. Australia's experience in tackling land degradation has been important in helping other countries within the UNCCD to address their dry-land management problems. International cooperation between Australia and developing countries takes place through the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and international agricultural research centres, including those operating within the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
