Thematic issue 3: Forest biodiversity

Forest ecosystems are vital for biodiversity as they are home to the vast majority of the world's terrestrial species. Forests in Australia also provide the resource base for primary and manufacturing timber industries. Australian governments pursue sustainable forest management through the implementation of the 1992 National Forest Policy Statement, participation in the Montreal Process to develop criteria and indicators of sustainable forest management, and through the development of Regional Forest Agreements between the Australian and State governments. Australia's contribution to the work of the CBD on forest biodiversity is made in conjunction with its engagement with the UN Forum on Forests.
