Thematic issue 5: Island biodiversity

Australia, itself a biologically rich continental island with a number of biologically rich off-shore islands, has a strong interest in efforts to conserve island biodiversity and biological resources, with particular effort focussed on our region of the south-west Pacific and eastern Indian ocean.

Australia assists a number of regional island countries to protect threatened areas of high biological diversity and is also promoting cooperation in the region to protect migratory species and to strengthen capacity to address marine biodiversity conservation issues such as illegal fishing, sustainable fishing, marine debris, bioprospecting and marine scientific research . The CBD is a key forum for these issues and Australia has been an active participant in the development of the new CBD work programme on island biodiversity.
