Thematic issue 7: Mountain biodiversity

Australia is a generally flat, dry continent with very few mountain areas scattered across the continent from the cool, temperate south to the tropical north. However, these are often biologically rich and isolated islands, protected for their conservation values. Australia's highest mountains are situated in the Australian Alps bioregion, which has the highest area under conservation management in Australia. More than 1.6 million hectares, or 79.57 per cent of the bioregion is protected to conserve unique plants and animals, a rich cultural heritage, and the headwaters of some of Australia's most important rivers.
