A long-lived wetland providing habitat for a variety of aquatic and terrestrial organisms in an otherwise arid and waterless environment.
General description
An extensive system of channels and floodouts on the lower reaches of the Diamantina River.
ANZECC-listed species
The kowari Dasycercus byrnei (E) occurs in the vicinity1.
Regional endemics
None identified.
Relict species
A distinctive race of the grey grasswren, Amytornis barbatus diamantina, is found only in Goyder's Lagoon and in a few other isolated pockets in far western Queensland2.
Other significant species
Grass owls exist as an isolated population in the Lagoon3.
