Action Plans and Conservation Overviews
Action plans and conservation overviews are major documents that have been produced by the Department since the commencement of the Endangered Species Program in 1989.
About Action Plans
Action plans are strategic documents undertaken by scientists to review the status of a defined group of related organisms (e.g. birds, fish). They review the conservation status of major Australian taxonomic groups against IUCN categories, identify threats and recommend actions to minimise those threats. Action plans assist government and non-government organisations to establish national priorities for threatened species conservation.
Current action plans are in place for the following Australian fauna:
- The Action Plan for Australian Bats - 1999
- The Action Plan for Australian Birds - 2000
- The Action Plan for Australian Butterflies - 2002
- The Action Plan for Australian Cetaceans - 1999
- The Action Plan for Australian Freshwater Fishes - 1993
- The Action Plan for Australian Frogs - 1998
- The Action Plan for Australian Marsupials and Monotremes - 1996
- The Action Plan for Australian Reptiles - 1994
- The Action Plan for Australian Rodents - 1995
- The Action Plan for Australian Seals - 1996
- Conservation Overview and Action Plan for Australian Threatened and Potentially Threatened Marine and Estuarine Fishes - 2002
- A Review of the Conservation Status of Selected Australian Non-Marine Invertebrates
Please Note: Due to changes since the time of printing, the conservation status of many of the species referred to in the above action plans may be out of date. Information on the current status of threatened species listed under the EPBC Act can be found at:
About Conservation Overviews
Conservation overviews are more general reviews of conservation issues for taxa where not enough is known to review the status of all individual species within that taxon. Conservation overviews have been published for the following groups:
