Bryophytes
Extinct, endangered, vulnerable, rare or potentially vulnerable bryophytes and their critical habitats (where known)
The following threat categories and definitions have been adapted from those in Briggs and Leigh (1989).
Distribution Code
1 – signifies known only from the type collection, or a single Australian collection if the type locality is overseas.
2 – Very restricted; total range less than 100 km.
3 – Highly localised but range over 100 km.
Threat Category
X – "Presumed Extinct"; a species not definitely located in the wild during the past 50 years or species that have not been found in recent years despite thorough searching.
E – "Endangered"; a species in danger of extinction or whose survival is unlikely if the causal factors (such as reduction in habitat) continue operating. Included are species which would be classified as X except that 50 years have not elapsed since they were last recorded.
V – "Vulnerable"; species believed likely to move into the Endangered category in the near future if the causal factors continue operating.
Extreme rarity is, by itself, sufficient grounds to render a species endangered because only comparatively small environmental change (such as caused by fire, flood, disease) would be required to cause extinction . Two categories for "Rare" are used, defined as:
R – "Rare" the species is recorded only from the type locality or from a very few localities
R2 – species with low or localised populations or dependent upon limited habitat that would be vulnerable to new threatening processes
P – "Potentially Vulnerable"; species of satisfactory distribution and/or abundance but faced with present or foreseeable pressures which could lead the species to become endangered.
Taxonomic Status
? – a question mark immediately prior to the taxonomic name denotes a species whose taxonomy has not yet been reviewed, and where the species is judged at best only tentatively worth recognition. A great many of the older species, known only from the type specimen, will fall into this category. (Note that question marks are also used elsewhere in the following information to indicate uncertainty about other information).
