Summary

This document constitutes the draft national recovery plan for the grey-headed flying-fox Pteropus poliocephalus. It considers the conservation requirements of the species throughout its range, sets objectives for recovery and identifies actions to be undertaken to reverse decline and ensure long-term viability.

The grey-headed flying-fox is listed as Vulnerable under both the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 and the New South Wales Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. The species is listed as threatened under the Victorian Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988, and its threatened status is under consideration in Queensland.

The primary threats affecting the species are loss and degradation of foraging and roosting habitat, deliberate destruction associated with commercial horticulture and competition for resources from the black flying-fox, Pteropus alecto.
