What is a protected area?

The World Conservation Union (IUCN) defines a protected area as: "An area of land (and/or sea) especially dedicated to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, and of natural and associated cultural resources, and managed through legal or other effective means". Protected areas in Australia include national parks, nature reserves, wilderness parks, marine reserves, crown reserves, and non-government managed reserves such as private conservancies, private lands with perpetual covenants and Indigenous Protected Areas.
