About the workshop
A technical workshop was held on the 1st to 3rd of July 2009 by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee (TSSC), to bring together aquatic scientists and related experts to commence assessment of the Lower Murray River and associated wetlands, floodplains and groundwater systems from the junction of the Darling River to the Sea, for potential listing as a threatened ecological community under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). As this is the first river system to be assessed under the EPBC Act, the workshop also focused on the broader issue of adapting the listing process to aquatic ecosystems.
This technical workshop report is for information only, and presents a summary and synthesis of the aims, presentations, discussions and outcomes of the workshop. The views expressed in the report do not represent the views of the Minister and the Department, and may not represent those of the TSSC.
The TSSC will consider this report, together with other relevant information and extensive consultation before completing its assessment of this ecological community by late 2011.
