Threatened Species Network Grant Recipients 2004-2005
On September 7, the 2004 Threatened Species Network Community Grants recipients were announced. The Grants are a joint initiative of the $2.7 billion Natural Heritage Trust and the World Wide Fund For Nature. Summaries of the projects are listed by state, below.
New South Wales
Project Title: Restoration of woodland bird habitat at Cowra
Grant: $13,333
Proponent: Birds Australia
Project Description:
This project is a collaboration between Birds Australia, local landholders and volunteer Birdwatchers. It aims to restore woodland bird habitat in the Cowra region, where species such as the endangered Swift Parrot and vulnerable Superb Parrot live.
Project Title: Green and Golden Bell Frog - Davistown
Grant: $18,692

Project Description:
This project aims to create breeding ponds and monitor areas of Green and Golden Bell Frog habitat, and also plans to enhance movement corridors between populations.
Project Title: Protecting Malleefowl and other threatened species habitat on Tar-Ru Station
Grant: $28,589

Project Description:
The endangered Malleefowl and Regent Parrot will get a helping hand through this project. Conservation activities will include fencing to reduce grazing pressures and education programs with local Indigenous communities.
Project Title: Threat abatement for endangered Pimelea spicata, Parrotts Farm
Grant: $14,239

Project Description:
This project will focus on the endangered Pimelia spicata and the endangered ecological community of Cumberland Plain Woodland. Over 12 months, work will include rubbish removal, revegation, fencing and community training.
Project Title: Protecting Grassy Box Woodland for Curlew conservation
Grant: $27,300
Proponent: Nature Conservation Working Group
Project Description:
This project aims to protect, enhance and expand the nationally endangered Grassy Box Woodland at the same time securing habitat for the Bush Stone-curlew and the endangered Regent Honeyeater and Swift Parrot.

Northern Territory
Project Title: Monitoring and conserving threatened mammals on the Sir Edward Pellew Islands
Grant: $25,000
Proponent: Mabunji Aboriginal Resource Association
Project Description:
This project will see traditional owners working with the community to establish a monitoring program for the vulnerable Carpentarian Antechinus and other threatened mammals on the Sir Edward Pellew Islands. The project will build knowledge about fauna surveying, feral and fire management techniques and areas of importance for traditional owners.

Project Title: Management of Yellow Chat (Capricorn subspecies) habitat and identification of range on the mainland

Project Description:
The overall objective of the informal recovery team has been the conservation of the critically endangered Yellow Chat at Curtis Island. Previous activities have included ecological surveys and habitat mapping. This next stage of the project will target management objectives and complete first round items.
Project Title: Upper Peterson Creek revegetation consolidation: Yungaburra
Grant: $6,040
Proponent: Trees for the Evelyn and Atherton Tablelands Inc (TREAT Inc)
Project Description:
Since 1998, TREAT has planted around 25,000 trees in the area. They will use their TSN Grant to raise and plant about 1,500 plants of selected Mabi Forest species along Peterson Creek.
Project Title: Cassowary conservation Black Mountain
Grant: $600
Proponent: Kuranda EnviroCare Inc.
Project Description:
Cassowary habitat is under threat in the Kuranda region of the Wet Tropics, and Kuranda EnviroCare Inc. is carrying out species/habitat monitoring.
Project Title: Habitat restoration, monitoring and education of the Giant Barred-Frog in the Maroochy & Mooloolah River catchments
Grant: $17,700
Proponent: Maroochy River Catchment Network Waterwatch Incorporated
Project Description:
This project aims to restore habitat for the endangered Giant Barred-Frog and the state-listed Cascade Tree Frog and Tusked Frog. Conservation activities will include community monitoring of frog species in the region, community education workshops and the development of a local recovery plan.
Project Title: Threatened species protection project for Wambo Shire Uplands
Grant: $23,200
Proponent: Dalby Wambo Landcare Group Inc
Project Description:
This project will target the protection of threatened vegetation communities in the Wambo Shire Uplands, including the endangered Brigalow/Belah, and Semi-evergreen vine thickets of the Brigalow Belt (North and South) and Nandewar Bioregions.
Project Title: Cascades Gardens Flying-Fox colony enhancement and management
Grant: $16,081
Proponent: Bat Rescue Inc.
Project Description:
Bat Rescue and other partners plan to stabilize existing roosting sites for the Grey-headed Flying-fox, and will also introduce a community education program to raise public awareness of the plight of this vulnerable species.
Project Title: South Maria Creek/Dargin Road Cassowary Corridor
Grant: $15,600

Project Description:
This project will protect remnant vegetation on South Maria Creek and enlarge habitat for the endangered Southern Cassowary, which has been tracked on the site. 8,000 native species will be planted by community volunteers to create special 'cassowary corridors'.

Project Title: Urgent recovery actions for threatened flora, Yorke Peninsula
Grant: $21,990

Project Description:
The Nature Conservation Society of SA Inc. aims to use its TSN Grant to undertake population monitoring, surveys and community workshops to help protect eight threatened plant species, including the endangered Acacia entercarpa and Caladenia macroclavia and vulnerable Acacia rhetinocarpa and Caladenia brumalis.
Project Title: Arid recovery

Project Description:
This TSN grant will be used to establish a managed breeding population of the endangered Western barred Bandicoot at the Arid Recovery Reserve.

Project Title: Golden Sun Moth conservation at Craigieburn Grassland

Project Description:
This project aims to restore and expand the habitats of the critically endangered Golden Sun Moth and the vulnerable Striped Legless Lizards. It also aims to restore the native grassland community.
Project Title: Dwarf Kerrawang and Grassy Woodland restoration (Gippsland region)

Project Description:
This project will increase the population of endangered Dwarf Kerrawang and threatened Gippsland Plains Grassy Woodland through direct seeding and planting. Ongoing management and monitoring will also be major components.
Project Title: Saving Spring Soaks
Grant: $8,675
Proponent: Wooragee Landcare Group
Project Description:
This two-staged project will focus on raising the profile of the endangered Warby Swamp Gum and vulnerable Narrow goodenia through identifying the threats to habitat, managing sites on private land and public education.
Project Title: Protecting Eastern Barred Bandicoots through feral cat control
Grant: $6,900
Proponent: Hamilton Field Naturalists Club
Project Description:
Roaming and feral cats at Hamilton are impacting on the critically endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot. This project plans to raise community awareness about responsible pet ownership and work with local government to implement a feral cat trapping program.
Project Title: Restoration and rehabilitation of the Bookaar Grassland Reserve
Grant: $6,700
Proponent: Lake Bookaar Recreation Reserve Committee of Management
Project Description:
The Bookaar Grassland Reserve contains significant Plans Grassy Woodland species, which has been damaged by grazing and introduced species. The project will restore the reserve through revegetation.
Project Title: Protection and recovery of SE Mallee Chariot Wheels
Grant: $22,650
Proponent: Birchip Landcare Group
Project Description:
The Birchip Landcare Group plan to implement priority actions listed in the National Recovery Plan for Maireana cheelii (Chariot Wheels) and the SE Mallee Biodiversity Action Plan. Some of the conservation activities will include habitat mapping, fencing and signage.
Project Title: Protection and enhancement of Dianella amoena (Matted Flax-lily) habitat
Grant: $11,900
Proponent: Gippsland Plains Rail Trail Committee of Management
Project Description:
This project aims to ensure that Dianella amoena is protected within the rail reserve through a range of activities, including weed control, habitat restoration and public awareness.
Project Title: Maintenance of coastal flyways for Swift Parrot
Grant: $11,000
Proponent: Lakes Entrance Golf Club Inc.
Project Description:
The Lakes Entrance Golf Club and the Lake Bunga Foreshore Committee plan to maintain and improve local native vegetation that supports a range of threatened species, including the Swift Parrot and Grey-headed Flying Fox.
Project Title: Critical feeding habitat for Grey-headed Flying Fox
Grant: $17,600
Proponent: Colquhoun-North Arm Landcare Group
Project Description:
This project aims to help restore 2.25 hectares of warm temperate rainforest around the north arm at Lakes Entrance. Similar restoration of areas near Lakes Entrance provided feeding habitat within two years for the nationally-listed Grey-headed Flying Fox.
Project Title: Food plants for Malleefowl
Grant: $8,710
Proponent: Friends of Kooyoora Inc. & Wedderburn Conservation Management Network
Project Description:
This project seeks to revegetate with native species an area of cleared land near private bushland, which is home to an active pair of endangered Malleefowl. The project will also commence species monitoring in the area.

Project Title: Desert partnership: conserving rock wallabies in the Calvert range
Grant: $20,240
Proponent: Jigalong Community Inc.
Project Description:
The only remaining western desert population of the vulnerable Black-footed Rock-wallaby exists in the Calvert Range. This project aims to involve the Martu people in monitoring and managing the wallabies, along with other threatened species in the area.
Project Title: Encouraging community involvement in the recovery of the Margaret River Marron
Grant: $16,500
Proponent: Cape to Cape Catchments Group
Project Description:
The Margaret River Marron ( Cherax tenuimanus ) is under threat from the introduced 'smooth' Marron and populations have declined dramatically over the last 20 years. This project will undertake habitat and distribution monitoring and increase public awareness of the Margaret River Marron.
Project Title: Recovery of critically endangered Wheatbelt Plants in WA
Grant: $30,000
Proponent: Bruce Rock LCDC
Project Description:
This project will use new and innovative biotechnological research to improve translocation for three endangered plants - the Hoffman's Spider-orchid (spp. Graniticola ), Underground Orchid and Bancrofts Symonanthus.
Project Title: Developing on-ground management options for the Bilby ( Macrotis lagotis ) in the Edgar Range area of the southern Kimberley
Grant: $18,000
Proponent: Jarlmadangah Burru Aboriginal Community
Project Description:
This represents the second stage of a two-phased project to develop on-ground management options for the Bilby in and around Edgar Range area of the southern Kimberley. Traditional owners will use data collected under Stage 1 to carry out fire management, and work with neighbouring landholders to explore the development of a regional Bilby management plan.
Project Title: Community monitoring of Rock-wallabies in Cape Range
Grant: $6,000
Proponent: Cape Conservation Group
Project Description:
The Cape Conservation Group plans to conduct a survey on the abundance and distribution of the Black-footed Rock-wallaby on North-West Cape. Four surveys, which will involve local Exmouth District residents, will take place over a one-year period using scat identification and trapping and sighting methods.
Project Title: NEWroc coordinated pest management
Grant: $16,500
Proponent: Trayning Land Conservation District Committee
Project Description:
This project will assist landholders in actively managing pests in a coordinated effort as part of 'Pest Week' held every year in March. Foxes will be specifically targeted with baiting in known Malleefowl habitat.
Project Title: Dampier Downs natural springs and endangered species conservation
Grant: $30,000
Proponent: Pete De Long
Project Description:
This project aims to protect rare and threatened species such as the Black-footed Rock-wallaby and Edgar Range Pandanas. Around 38 kilometres of fencing will manage and exclude stock from the fragile natural springs habitat.
Project Title: Lake Gladstone/Glenroy rehabilitation project
Grant: $8,672.28
Proponent: Mount House Pastoral Partnership
Project Description:
The Mount House Pastoral Partnership aims to build a 5 kilometre fence around Lake Gladstone to regenerate and protect habitat for the vulnerable Red Goshawk and endangered Gouldian Finch.
Project Title: Poison Gully Reserve habitat creation
Grant: $2,000
Proponent: Friends of Poison Gully Reserve
Project Description:
This project plans to protect, restore and promote the threatened ecological community of the Poison Gully Reserve. Species in the area include the endangered Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo. Fencing and community workshops are some of the conservation activities that will take place.
