Section 303CH(3)(b) of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) has been recently amended. The amendments take effect as of 19 February, 2007.
Prior to the amendments, commercial imports of 'ranched'1 or 'wild sourced'2 Appendix II CITES3 specimens (source codes R and W) were required to be sourced from a Commercial Import Program (CIP) approved by this Department.
Under the new amendments, the requirement for Appendix II specimens 'ranched' or 'wild sourced' from a CIP will apply only in relation to declared specimens (listed below). The Minister may specify a wildlife specimen as a 'declared specimen' by publishing a notice in the Public Gazette.
These amendments do not affect specimens that have been captive bred or artificially propagated (source codes C or A), which may be commercially imported as per existing arrangements.
Further information about declared specimens, CIPs or CITES permits can be obtained through this website, or by contacting:

Email: wildlifetrade@environment.gov.au
The declaration does not take affect until the date of gazettal.
