Grey kangaroo numbers determined from aerial survey were apportioned to eastern and western greys (approximately 70:30) according to ground surveys by Caughley et al. (1984) and harvest records.
Eastern grey kangaroo numbers for the eastern highlands (Southwell et al. 1997) have been included into the total estimate since 1989. This estimate is shown as a thin line and is used to determining the quota. Wallaroo population estimates were determined from these ground surveys (solid symbols) and, since 1993, have been combined with estimates from helicopter surveys (open symbols).
