Exporting kangaroo products
The Australian Government is committed to protecting and conserving Australian native wildlife by regulating international trade. This helps to protect targeted species against overexploitation, and Australian ecosystems against the introduction of invasive species.
Kangaroos in trade
Kangaroos are harvested mainly to supply high-quality leather to the fashion industry. Meat and souvenir products manufactured as by-products are also traded. International trade in kangaroos is regulated for humane reasons, and for the protection of these iconic animals.
In Australia, state and territory governments have primary responsibility for managing kangaroos and wallabies. The Australian Government only becomes involved when kangaroo products are exported overseas.
Exporting live kangaroos
Export of live kangaroos is not permitted for any commercial purposes, but may be permitted for some non-commercial uses.
Exporting kangaroos products
Any kangaroo product to be exported for commercial trade must have come from an approved source.
Permit for kangaroo product exports
You will need a permit to export most kangaroo products. To obtain a permit, complete:
- Application for a Single Use Permit to import, export or re-export wildlife or wildlife products (PDF - 95KB) | (RTF - 383KB) *
* Multiple use permits are also available
Personal effects
But if you are taking kangaroo products out of Australia as personal effects, you will not need a permit, as long as the products are not for commercial use and have been acquired legally.
