Statement of Significance:
The site is a classic example of a newly formed landslide blocked lake and a number of geomorphological features represent the drainage adjustments upstream and downstream from the landslide. Because the date of the landslide is known, it forms a model whereby geological, hydrological and meteorological factors relevant to landslide analysis may be studied. Important fishery for two species of native fish. Vegetation type in this catchment river provides habitat for many uncommon and rare mammals and birds. Part of the Barwon catchment. Important water supply for Geelong.

Description:
Lake Elizabeth formed when a landslide blocked the east branch of the Barwon River on 17 June 1952. Originally the lake extended for 1.6km upstream from the landslide dam and by 8 August 1952 water overtopped the landslide and flowed down a natural spillway. Twelve months later the top of the landslide dam breached and a surge of water carried boulders, etc, several kilometres downstream. The residual dam is now one fifth of original size. Surrounding vegetation is open forest. Species includes messmate stringybark, eurabbie, swamp gum, brown stringybark. Five fish species recorded, over thirty eight bird species known to occur regularly in this forest type, over fifteen mammalian species known to inhabit this forest type.
History: Not Available
Condition and Integrity:
Present condition is good with little disturbance from logging in recent times. However, the land surrounding the lake (including the catchment) is controlled by forestry and logging may take place in the future. (Statement as at December 1993)
Location:
About 1300ha, 5km south-east of Forrest, comprising the upper catchment of the Barwon River (East Branch) that lies south-east of a line joining AMG points: 7620-Otway-398297 and 391284.
