Statement of Significance
A stairway of historic and architectural significance, which has been in public use since 1868 for access between Macquarie Street and Circular Quay. There is fine detailing in the stonework and the cast ironwork. Such pedestrian access routes are important reminders of the nature of nineteenth century cities.

Description
A flight of sandstone stairs with an intermediate landing on which is a cast iron lamp post. The two bottom piers and portion of the stone coping were recarved about 1976. There is an iron bollard at the top and bottom and iron handrails are attached to each balustrade wall.
