Statement of Significance
Yackandandah provides an excellent example of a nineteenth century mining township which has developed into a rural service centre. The main street (High Street) is the area of dominant historic character with its uniform and largely wooden shop fronts and mainly single storey buildings with hoardings and canopies fronting a street lined with mature exotic trees. The form and the extent of the main built up area of the town is conditioned by the topography of the surrounding land.

(The Commission is in the process of developing and/or upgrading official statements for places listed prior to 1991. The above data was mainly provided by the nominator and has not yet been revised by the Commission.)

Description
Because of the physical setting of the town it has developed in a compact manner although on closer inspection it is in reality a scattering of buildings except for the High Street frontages. Urban areas rapidly merge into farmland on the periphery and the open land on the western approaches to the town provide a contrast to the intensity of the main street. The Yackandandah Creek and its association with the gold rush is a valuable component of the town.

Condition and Integrity
The town has undergone change - without materially destroying its overall character. Changes to the nineteenth century buildings in High Street also have not destroyed the streets special character.
