Collisella mixta (Family Acmaeidae)

Granulated Limpet

The Granulated Limpet is distributed from Lakes Entrance, Victoria, to southern South Australia. It is occasionally found in Tasmania. (VIC, TAS, SA)

The Granulated Limpet has a thick, oval shell that is solid, tall and twice as long as wide. Its shell apex is at one third from front. The shell surface is finely granular. The front slope of the shell is convex. The hind slope is steep and almost straight. The shell sculpture consists of up to 30 irregular, often eroded, flat radial ribs. The shell length is usually15-21mm, but may grow to 23 mm, while the shell width is 15-18 mm.

The shell exterior is grey to yellow or fawn, marked with darker markings or dark-brown rays often forming a distinctive "Maltese cross". Other shells may be quite variable such as the shell is being black with two pure white radials upon it. Other shells may have four wide black patches, while others may have reticulated markings, or no markings at all. There is so much colour variation that in the past this shell had a number of species names attributed to it.

The shell interior is bluish-white with a dark brown margin, spatula and markings.

Ecology/Way of Life:

It is found at high to mid-tide levels on exposed rocky shore platforms. Occurs most often in holes and crevices. In the Derwent estuary has been found on Edible Mussels, Mytilus edulus planulatus.

Interaction with Humans/Threats:

Unknown threats. There appears to be great variation and confusion in these genera, so it is difficult to know which species is being dealt with.
