An erect thin shrub to 2m high, with white to light pink flowers hidden amongst the large persistent bracts (Harden 1991; Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d; Armstrong 2002).

This species is known from rugged bushland adjoining the Blue Mountains, north-west of Sydney, NSW where it is restricted to fewer than 20 populations between Yengo NP in the north and Marramarra NP in the south ( NSW NPWS 2003d). Past records have placed the species in Blue Mountains NP (Briggs & Leigh 1996; Armstrong 2002) and Harden (1991, 2002) states that it occurs west to the Katoomba district. It was not found there during the survey work carried out for the 1994 recovery plan (Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d) and has not been recorded there since the 1980s (NSW NPWS 2003d).

In 2002, up to 20 populations were known containing approximately 3000 mature plants. At least six of these populations are conserved within national parks (Yengo, Wollemi and Marramarra) and three others are within the Parr State Conservation Area (NSW NPWS 2003d).

In 1993, the 12 known populations contained a total of 1790 plants and ranged in size from 30 to 489 plants, covering an area of 312 km&#178. Reports of three additional populations near Maroota, 5 km south of Wisemans Ferry, were unconfirmed (Maryott-Brown 1994c). Most sites were burnt by extreme bushfires in Jan. 1994 and apparently suffered heavy casualties. When sites in Marramarra NP were revisited a month after the fires, only two surviving plants were found (Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d).

This species is similar to Zieria cytisoides but differs in having some simple leaves and both simple and trifoliate leaves on the same plant (Armstrong 2002; Harden 2002).

The species grows in neutral to slightly acid, shallow sandy soils, derived from Hawkesbury Sandstone. It occurs on steep to gentle slopes on virtually every aspect, at altitudes of 70-320 m on the mid to lower slopes of valleys (Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d).

Showing a strong preference for creek verges, the species is an understorey shrub in wet sclerophyll forest with a dense shrub and medium to dense herb layer (Harden 1991; Maryott-Brown 1994c; Armstrong 2002). The canopy is composed of Syncarpia glomulifera, Angophora costata, Eucalyptus agglomerata and Allocasuarina torulosa. The endangered shrub Asterolasia elegans also occurs in this habitat (Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d).

Armstrong (2002) provided the following information about specific sites:
- Valley Hts. Along a creek, in alluvial sandy soil, in tall open eucalypt forest amongst the common ground fern Calochlaena dubia.
- Lower Colo R. On the slopes of a creek bank, in sandy soil, in 'dry (tending wettish) sclerophyll woodland', with Acacia ulicifolia, Angophora costata, Syncarpia glomulifera and Grevillea mucronulata.
- Marra Marra Ck. In a creek bed in deep sandy soil in a tall open forest of Eucalyptus piperita, Syncarpia glomulifera, Allocasuarina torulosa and Angophora costata; associated species include Zieria pilosa, Pultenaea flexilis, P. daphnoides, Persoonia linearis and Banksia spinulosa.

Flower buds begin to form in April, and flowers appear Sept.-Nov. (Harden 1991; Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d; Armstrong 2002). Fruits take 6-8 weeks to mature, and are borne from Nov. to Jan. (Harden 1991; Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d; Armstrong 2002). The species is capable of setting fruit following self-pollination (Armstrong 2002).

In good conditions, plants flower and set fruit two years after germinating but more commonly 3-5 years is needed. The length of seed dormancy is highly variable and the seed bank has a short lifespan. Dormancy is broken by temperatures of 80-110&#176C for a short time period (Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d; Armstrong 2002).

Some plants will resprout from subsurface epicormic outgrowths following fire but the majority are killed. Fire stimulates successful regeneration from seed (Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d; Auld, T.K. in Armstrong 2002). Three of four populations studied were stands of even height and are assumed to be even-aged (Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d). Lifespan is expected to be 10-15 years. A rough half life for populations is 2-3 years (Maryott-Brown 1994c, 1994d).
