National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Measurement) Determination

The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Measurement) Determination 2008 provides methods and criteria for calculating greenhouse gas emissions and energy data under the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act 2007 (NGER Act).

The initial instrument, National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Measurement) Determination 2008 has been updated annually, in 2009 and 2010, reflecting improvements in estimation methods and responding to feedback from industry. The National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (Measurement) Amendment Determination 2011 continues this process and is applicable to reporting required for the NGER Act, in the 2011–12 reporting year.

The range of emission sources covered in the Determination includes:

  • the combustion of fuels for energy
  • fugitive emissions from the extraction of coal
  • oil and gas
  • industrial processes (such as producing cement and steel)
  • waste management.

The methods used within the NGER (Measurement) Determination are based on those used for the National Greenhouse Accounts.
