Bass Strait Central Zone Scallop Fishery
Ministerial Decision
David Kemp, Minister for the Environment and Heritage, 3 March 2003
Dr Wendy Craik
Chair
Australian Fisheries Management Authority
Box 7051 Canberra Mail Centre
Canberra ACT 2610
Dear Dr Craik
You will recall that in my letter of 4 July 2002 I advised you of the outcome of the assessment of the Bass Strait Central Zone Scallop Fishery (BSCZSF). I also advised that a number of legislative steps were required before these decisions could be finalised.
I am pleased to advise that these legislative processes have been completed and there is no further action required for the BSCZSF assessment other than the requirements of the export approval.
I recently declared this fishery an approved wildlife trade operation (WTO) and this declaration will expire on 30 June 2005. On 11 November 2002 I tabled in Parliament my notice of intent to accredit the Bass Strait Central Zone Scallop Fishery Management Plan 2002. The disallowance period for the notice has now elapsed and I have recently signed a declaration formally accrediting the management plan in accordance with the EPBC Act section 146 agreement for this fishery. I have also recently given effect to my commitment to accredit the fishery under the protected species provisions of the EPBC Act.
Once again I would like to thank you for the constructive and cooperative way in which your officers have engaged in the strategic assessment process for this and other Commonwealth managed fisheries.
Yours sincerely
[Signed]
David Kemp
