2007 Submission for environmental assessment under the EPBC Act

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA), on behalf of the Protected Zone Joint Authority (PZJA), is currently developing a management plan for the Torres Strait Prawn Fishery.
AFMA is inviting review and comments on the draft Plan. All comments need to be received prior to 2 July 2008.

The current export approval for the Torres Strait Prawn Fishery is valid until 29 November 2008, however with the introduction of a new Plan of Management for the Torres Strait Prawn Fishery, the fishery needs to undergo a new Strategic Assessment for ongoing export accreditation. The Department of the Environment and Water Resources (DEW) received a submission - Fishery assessment report, Torres Strait Prawn Fishery, November 2007 from the Australian Fisheries Management Authority, on behalf of the Torres Strait Protected Zone Joint Authority in November 2007.
The report has been prepared to address the Australian Government Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries, 2nd edition (the Guidelines) and to provide updates on the implementation of recommendations made in the original DEW assessment. The submission will be used to assess the operation of the fishery for the purposes of Parts 13 and 13A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
