About the report
The Northern Territory Department of Business, Industry and Resource Development (DBIRD) submitted the document Assessing the Ecological Sustainability of the Northern Territory Shark Fishery to the Commonwealth Minister for the Environment and Heritage in August 2004. The submission contains an assessment of the Northern Territory Shark Fishery (NTSF) against the Australian Government Guidelines for assessing the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries (the Guidelines).
The purpose of the submission is to provide for an assessment of the impacts of actions taken under the management arrangements for the fishery against Parts 13 and 13A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The submission was released for a 30 day public comment period that expired on 8 October 2004. Six submissions were received. Notably the Australian Marine Conservation Society's (AMCS) submission included 293 form letters addressed to the Northern Territory Minister for Primary Industry and Fisheries, the Hon Kon Vatskalis MLA. DBIRD provided a response to the issues raised and considered that no amendments were required to its original submission.
