About the submission
The current export approval for the Broome Prawn Managed Fishery, Kimberley Prawn Managed Fishery and the Onslow and Nickol Bay Prawn Managed Fishery is valid until 30 April 2010 and the fisheries are now due for assessment for ongoing export accreditation. The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts (DEWHA) received a submission - Application to the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts on the Broome Prawn Managed Fishery, Kimberley Prawn Managed Fishery, Onslow and Nickol Bay Prawn Managed Fishery from the Government of Western Australia, Department of Fisheries in October 2009. The report has been prepared to address the Australian Government Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries, 2nd edition (the Guidelines) and to provide updates on the implementation of recommendations made in the original DEWHA assessment. The submission will be used to assess the operation of each of the fisheries for the purposes of Parts 13 and 13A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
Consideration will be given to:
- declaring the Broome Prawn Managed Fishery as managed consistent with the Broome Prawn Managed Fishery Management Plan 1999, made under the Western Australian Fish Resources Management Act 1994, as an Approved Wildlife Trade Operation under section 303FN of the EPBC Act; and
- including on the list of exempt native specimens, specimens harvested in the Broome Prawn Managed Fishery under the provisions of the Broome Prawn Managed Fishery Management Plan 1999, made under the Western Australian Fish Resources Management Act 1994.
- declaring the Kimberley Prawn Managed Fishery as managed consistent with the Kimberley Prawn Managed Fishery Management Plan 1993, made under the Western Australian Fish Resources Management Act 1994, as an Approved Wildlife Trade Operation under section 303FN of the EPBC Act; and
- including on the list of exempt native specimens, specimens harvested in the Kimberley Prawn Managed Fishery under the provisions of the Kimberley Prawn Managed Fishery Management Plan 1993, made under the Western Australian Fish Resources Management Act 1994.
- declaring the Onslow and Nickol Bay Prawn Managed Fishery as managed consistent with the Onslow and Nickol Bay Prawn Managed Fishery Management Plan 1991, made under the Western Australian Fish Resources Management Act 1994, as an Approved Wildlife Trade Operation under section 303FN of the EPBC Act; and
- including on the list of exempt native specimens, specimens harvested in the Onslow and Nickol Bay Prawn Managed Fishery under the provisions of the Onslow and Nickol Bay Prawn Managed Fishery Management Plan 1991, made under the Western Australian Fish Resources Management Act 1994.
In accordance with the provisions of sections 303FR and 303DC of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal.
The public comment period opens 11 November 2009 and the closing date for comments is Tuesday 15 December 2009.
