About the submission
The current export approval for the Western Australian (WA) South Coast Crustacean Fishery is valid until 20 September 2007 and the fishery is now due for assessment for ongoing export accreditation.
The Department of the Environment and Water Resources (DEW) received a submission Application to the Department of the Environment and Water Resources on the South Coast Crustacean Fishery, August 2007 from the Department of Fisheries, Western Australia (DFWA), which provides updates on the implementation of recommendations made in the original assessment of the fishery.
As DFWA has advised that there have been no changes to the fishery over the period of the declaration, DEW will also consider the original submission - Final Application to the Australian Government Department of Environment and Heritage on the South Coast Crustacean Fishery, May 2004 which was prepared to address the Australian Government Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries (the Guidelines).
The submissions will be used to assess the operation of the fishery for the purposes of Parts 13 and 13A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
Consideration will be given to:
- declaring the South Coast Crustacean Fishery as managed under the Windy Harbour Augusta Rock Lobster Fishery Management Plan 1987, the Esperance Rock Lobster Fishery Management Plan 1987, the Fish Resources Management Regulations 1995 (as they relate to the Albany and Great Australian Bight zones of the rock lobster pot fishery) and the Fish Traps Prohibition Notice 1994 and associated Fishing Boat Licence condition 105 (as they relate to the deep sea crab component of the fishery), made under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 as an Approved Wildlife Trade Operation under section 303FN of the EPBC Act; and
- including on the list of exempt native specimens, specimens harvested in the South Coast Crustacean Fishery as managed under the Windy Harbour Augusta Rock Lobster Fishery Management Plan 1987, the Esperance Rock Lobster Fishery Management Plan 1987, the Fish Resources Management Regulations 1995 (as they relate to the Albany and Great Australian Bight zones of the rock lobster pot fishery) and the Fish Traps Prohibition Notice 1994 and associated Fishing Boat Licence condition 105 (as they relate to the deep sea crab component of the fishery), made under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994.
In accordance with the provisions of sections 303FR and 303DC of the EPBC Act, you were invited to comment on this proposal.
Closing date for comments was Wednesday 12 September 2007.
