About the document

The Australian Government is committed to develop, by 2012, a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) that, as a whole, is representative of the 41 provincial scale bioregions recognised in Commonwealth waters. Areas suitable for inclusion in the National Representative System of MPAs (NRSMPA) are identified during the marine bioregional planning process. The NRSMPA is being developed using the national Guidelines for Establishing the National Representative System of Marine Protected Areas (NRSMPA) agreed between the Australian Government, the states and the Northern Territory in 1998.
