Conservation values of the South-west Marine Region
Conservation values of the South-west Marine Region include:
- Key ecological features of the Commonwealth marine environment which are identified through the marine bioregional planning on the basis of the following criteria: (i) species and communities considered to play an important ecological role in the Region and (ii) habitats or areas considered to be ecologically important at a regional scale.
- Protected species including: (i) species listed as threatened under the EPBC Act; (ii) species listed as migratory under the EPBC Act; (iii) species listed as marine species under the EPBC Act; and (iv) all cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) by virtue of the Australian Whale Sanctuary declared under the EPBC Act.
- Protected places, including: (i) historic shipwrecks protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1976 such as, the recently discovered HMAS Sydney II; and (ii) Commonwealth marine reserves such as, the Great Australian Bight Marine Park off South Australia.
