Specific Sectoral Measures is the second part of Australia's Oceans Policy. It complements the first volume of the Policy by outlining specific measures that are being or will be pursued by the Commonwealth across ocean sectors and interests.
Those measures have been designed to advance the goals set for Australia's Oceans Policy. They are consistent with the new planning and management regime and management principles outlined in the first part of the Policy.
Specific Sectoral Measures is comprehensive in its scope, covering the major environmental, industry, community, research, scientific, international and defence interests that the Commonwealth has responsibility for in our marine jurisdictions.
Implementation
A detailed implementation schedule of these actions will be coordinated by the National Oceans Office. The schedule will be finalised within six months of the release of Australia's Oceans Policy. It will be developed with broad consultation and be oversighted by the National Oceans Ministerial Board.
The schedule will identify organisations responsible for implementing actions, priorities, milestones and resourcing. This detail will facilitate auditing of the Policy and contribute to an assessment of its effectiveness. Implications of integrated and ecosystem-based planning and management and Regional Marine Planning for major sectors will be identified. Performance assessment requirements for monitoring the Policy's progress in meeting both implementation and outcome goals will be a fundamental consideration in developing the schedule. Continuing review against agreed targets will be an integral part of the Policy's implementation.
