Coastal and Marine Pollution
Kogarah, New South Wales
Urban renewal of the Kogarah Town Square will see the construction of approximately 220 residential apartments, commercial retail space, a public library and town square. The development will be situated on the ridge between the densely urbanised catchments of the Cooks River and the Georges River that flow into Botany Bay. Both rivers and the Bay have degraded water quality and are subject to pressures from increasing urban consolidation, traffic densities and industrial activities.
Stormwater filtration will occur through a specially designed garden bed incorporating "ecosoil" or an equivalent. In periods of high stormwater flow, surge tanks will regulate the water flow prior to discharge into the stormwater system. Rainwater will be collected in tanks and reused in toilet cisterns, landscaping, and public water features. Reductions in the polluted stormwater entering the Cooks River, George River and Botany Bay will protect and enhance coastal and marine water quality.
The project aims to reduce the impact of stormwater through conservation and efficiency. The Kogarah Town Square project will demonstrate innovative techniques in water management coupled with energy savings in building design and energy generation from banks of photovoltaic cells.
