Coastal and Marine Pollution
Sydney, New South Wales
Manly is a fully developed (ultra-urban) suburb with high concentrations of residents and visitors. Impervious surfaces concentrate rainfall into stormwater that is polluted with nutrients, hydrocarbons, heavy metals, toxicants and litter. Drains discharge directly to Ocean Beach, polluting the waters and restricting swimming for up to three days after heavy rain.
External and internal screens will be fitted to existing stormwater drains. These will prevent litter and sediments from entering drains, and oils, fine sediments and grease from exiting drains. Porous pavement will replace existing road surfaces, and a newly established carpark will incorporate Atlantis paving that will treat, store and reuse stormwater runoff for irrigation on to Norfolk Island Pines along the foreshore.
The project aims to improve the quality of water entering Ocean Beach by using a sub-catchment 'treatment train'. Public education campaigns will support pollution control infrastructure, and will emphasise the role of individuals in disposing of litter appropriately. The project will promote best practice in a very high profile location, and will be an example for other 'ultra-urbanised' areas.
