Coastal and Marine Pollution

The Moonee Ponds Creek Litter Initiative

Melbourne, Victoria

Environmental Issues

There are an estimated three million pieces of litter flowing down Moonee Ponds Creek every year. The Yarra Estuary and Port Phillip Bay beaches are the recipients of much of this waste, impacting on the ecological, economic and recreational values of Melbourne's coastal waters.

Water Quality Management

This is a major project bringing together state and local government and industry to reduce litter pollution in the Moonee Ponds Creek catchment. Rubbish prevention and removal will be supported by public education and industrial, transport and commercial source control measures in an integrated treatment train approach along the Moonee Ponds Creek.

Resources 2000/2001 - 2001/2002

Longer Term Benefits

Reducing the amount of litter in Moonee Ponds Creek will have enduring benefits for the biodiversity of the stream, the Yarra Estuary and the nearby beaches. A best practice example will be provided for urban councils and water authorities in major coastal cities across Australia who are seeking to implement stormwater management plans.
