Coastal and Marine Pollution

CBD Urban Water Project

Townsville, North Queensland

Environmental Issues

Ross Creek is being polluted by leachate from contaminated sites, residential and industrial urban stormwater, litter from the Central Business District and sediment from high intensity rainfall. The Creek discharges to Cleveland Bay, which is part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and Dugong Protected Area.

Water Quality Management

Low to medium stormwater flows will be treated in stormwater basins. The basins will remove heavy metals, organic matter, bacteria and nutrients. Nettech Gross Pollutant Interceptor Traps, permanent water monitoring stations and sediment remediation techniques will be trialed. If successful, they may be used as pollution control measures in other tropical localities.

Resources 2000/2001 - 2001/2002

Longer Term Benefits

The aim of the project is to develop and demonstrate innovative and best practice stormwater management techniques in an area of low-lying surroundings with a high water table, and high intensity rainfall in a tropical urban and industrial environment.
