Environment Australia, 1999
Forty-three species of cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises) are known to occur in Australian waters. Sightings reports provide important information for the conservation and management of these animals. National Cetacean Sightings and Strandings Databases are maintained by the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources. You can provide valuable assistance by recording sightings, strandings and entanglements of cetaceans and reporting them as soon as possible.
The identification guide provides information on features of whales and dolphins in Australian waters.
Some of the large whales can be identified by their blow, surfacing and diving characteristics. Use this chart as a quick reference guide to identify the large whales you see.
