About the report

In March 2009 the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts convened an independent scientific panel to examine the most recent research on freshwater sawfish and provide advice on the biological impact of removal of the species from Australian river systems.

The panel identified possible future management options for freshwater sawfish in Australia, which are detailed in the Final Report of the Freshwater Sawfish Expert Committee June 2009. The advice in this report will help inform Australia's position on freshwater sawfish in advance of the next Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Conference of the Parties (March 2010). It will also be used to inform the development of a sawfish and freshwater shark multi-species recovery plan.
