About this document

Australia has submitted two papers to the 60th annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission (June 2008), "Development of Conservation Management Plans for Improved Cetacean Management" and "Regional Non-Lethal Collaborative Research Programs: A Proposal for the Southern Ocean". The proposals deliver Australia's March 2008 vision for the future of the IWC outlined in the paper "Whale Conservation and Management: A future for the IWC".

Australia proposes to modernise the IWC through conservation management plans, tailored to support the recovery of vulnerable cetacean species or regional populations and to address threats that affect multiple species. These plans will address recognised needs and coordinate and direct efforts to improve conservation outcomes.

We also propose to improve the IWC's research framework and cooperation between parties, through regional, non-lethal cetacean research partnerships. As a first step, we propose to lead a research partnership with other IWC members on living whales in the Southern Ocean.
