About the application

The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts has received an application for a permit to interfere with (close approach) a cetacean under Part 13, section 237 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The application is for close approach (30 metres by vessel or 180 - 200 metres by aircraft) and interference (attaching satellite tags and biopsy samples collection) with whale and dolphin species in the Australian Whale Sanctuary and waters beyond the outer limits of the Australian Whale Sanctuary. The applicant wishes to take photographs, attach satellite tags and collect biopsy samples for scientific research.

A permit is sought for the period commencing from the date of approval to 1 August 2012.

In accordance with the provisions of section 237(3b) of the EPBC Act, you were invited to comment on this proposal before COB Wednesday 5 September 2007.
