About the application
The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts has received an application for a permit to interfere with a cetacean under Part 13, section 237 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
The application is for close approach (10 meters) and interference (biopsy samples collection) with whale and dolphin species in Australian waters. The applicant wishes to empirically test the impacts of current approach distances for whale watching and dolphin watching vessels and collect biopsy samples for scientific research.
A permit is sought for the period commencing from the date of approval to 30 April 2013.
In accordance with the provisions of section 237(3b) of the EPBC Act, you were invited to comment on this proposal before COB Monday 19 May 2008.
