Pilbara bycatch reduction project - bottlenose dolphins - Western Australia

Cetacean permit application C2008-0003
Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, July 2008

About the application

The Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts has received an application for a permit to interfere with cetaceans under Part 13, section 237 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

This application is for a permit to conduct scientific research on cetaceans, primarily bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus and Tursiops aduncus), in Commonwealth waters in the Pilbara region off the Western Australian coastline. The applicant is seeking to gain a better understanding of how to reduce the incidental bycatch of bottlenose dolphins in the Pilbara Fish Trawl Interim Managed Fishery and to reduce the chance of harm and mortality if interactions do occur.

Part of this research will entail some interference with bottlenose dolphins, which will include making close approaches (within 100m) and collecting biological samples from both live, free-ranging and bycaught dolphins.

The permit is requested to begin on 1 August 2008 and finish on 1 August 2013.

In accordance with the provisions of section 237(3b) of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal before COB 8 August 2008.
