The Department of the Environment has received an application and draft environment assessment report under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 to include Huso huso (Beluga), Acipenser baerii (Siberian Sturgeon), Acipenser gueldenstaedtii (Russian Sturgeon), and the hybrid sturgeon Acipenser baerii x Acipenser gueldenstaedtii on the live import list for commercial aquaculture.
The report has been prepared against the standard terms of reference and assesses the suitability of these sturgeon species and hybrid for import into Australia.
Comments are invited on the draft report. It is available for public comment for 40 business days, closing on 30 January 2014. All comments received will be provided to the applicant to address in finalising the assessment report. Any relevant information provided will be considered by the department prior to briefing the minister.
