Subject: 38 Nordmann's Greenshank at Bagan Tambang,
Butterworth, Malaysia
Dear all,
Sorry for any cross posting!
On 12 January 2005, I surveyed the Bagan Tambang coast
at Butterworth, Penang state, the well known site for the Nordmann’s
Greeshank with funding support from the Oriental Birding Club. The team
member includes Choy Wai Mun and Sim Cheng Hua.
We start the survey at 11:30am during the raising tide,
only 6 Nordmann’s Greenshank were seen from a mixed flock of a few
thousands shorebirds (mainly Golden plover, Red-necked Stint and
Whimbrel) from about 100-200 m distance. At about 1:30pm, we left to
check the potential high tide roost which is 300-500m away, where we
only found a few hundred Redshanks and Golden Plovers. Wai Mun left at
3:00pm as he has some other issues to deal with on that day. At 3pm the
highest tide, I return to the mudflat we start the count. I found the
mudflat is not total covered by the tide, the birds are mostly gathering
in flocks and can be viewed from a 30-50m distance. A total three flocks
of Nordmann’s were observed this time make a total number of 38 of this
species. The count were finished at about 5:30pm, a total of 5,000
shorebirds were recorded.
I hereby would also like to share with one of the pics
(60kb) I took, it including 11 Nordmann’s within a flock of Great knot
and Whimbrels, I am sorry that birders on the OB may not able to receive
it, please do feel free to contact me so that I can send you in separate
emails.
However, the highest count of the species at the site
was made by Choy Wai Mun in October 2004 when the total number of 43 was
recorded at that time.
The housing development adjutant to the site has been a
great threat to the shorebirds and the globally Endangered Nordmann’s
Greenshank, however, there is no future plan of reclaim the mudflat or
cut off the mangrove at the moment by the government with the Tsunami
effects to the area. Set up bird sanctuary is very important and urgent
for the long-term conservation of this very important bird area.
