Subject: [OB] Sarus Crane population genetics study indicate
nodistinctsubspecies.

A new study of population genetics of Sarus Cranes just published in the

journal Animal Conservation by Ken Jones of the University of Illinois
and
his associates from the International Crane Foundation reveal that there
are
no subspecies in this species. This study utilised 13 DNA microsatellite

loci and investigated population structure of various individuals of
this
species with representatives from all three "subspecies". While
significant
divergence was observed among populations when individuals were assigned
to
geographical populations, analyses based solely on individual genotypes
demonstrated a clinal nature to the variation with the Indian Sarus
Cranes
and the Eastern Sarus Cranes forming two ends of the cline. This
evidence
suggests that there are no distinct subspecies within the species. This
may
be because the populations have not been seperated long enough. This
research supports recent thories that the Australian population was
derived
from mainland Asia. The Australian population most certainly will not
have a
chance to maintain gene flow with the other two populations in the Asian

continent. The Sarus Cranes in Myanmar may represent an introgression
zone
between the Indian and the Eastern populations.

Previous segregation of cranes in different areas as subspecies was
based on
morphological and plumage characteristics.
