You mention SGML in your email dated 30 July 1996.  

We use a form of SGML in the "Marine and Coastal Data Directory"
(URL:http://www.erin.gov.au/marine/mcdd).  These SGML files are marked
up into HTML documents which are freeWAIS-sf indexed for both spatial
and keyword searching.  Cut-down SGML versions of the individual
records are made available from the HTML metadata sets.  They are only
the "content" part of the SGML file.

I would be interested in seeing the DTD that you come up with for your
project.  I hope that all metadata can be transferred accross the
internet using SGML as a standard.
